Bichon

Bichon’s are known as an incredibly happy dog that are very playful and intelligent, and can do well in an apartment, especially because of their small size. They love receiving lots of attention and affection, and will give it all back in their own adorable way. Bichons have lots of love to give and will be very friendly towards strangers as well; they are known to always be cheerful and love being the center of attention of everyone they meet. Obedience training is recommended with Bichons, and they can be difficult to housetrain, and it is recommended to crate train them. Crate training is also recommended for when owners will be gone, as Bichons frequently get separation anxiety and can display destructive behaviors if they are alone and their energy isn’t focused. Bichons do not like to be left alone for long periods of time, and should be monitored especially when around kids, because of their size making them fragile. Bichons are active dogs and love to be played with; if they are in an apartment they still need to receive regular exercise as well as proper mental stimulation.

These adorable little bundles of love typically only weigh around 7 to 12 pounds, and are about 9 to 11 inches tall. Bichons have white coats that are soft and dense, and have a lot of texture that makes them difficult to groom. Often a professional groomer will be required, as the technique to care for a Bichon’s coat can be difficult to learn. While Bichon’s do shed, this fur gets caught in the rest of the coat and needs to be brushed out to keep their coat healthy. This breed can be prone to skin conditions and allergies, so it is important to maintain proper care of these sweet little puppies. Handling them and starting these practices early will make them more accustomed to receiving the care they require. Before purchasing a Bichon, make sure you are prepared for the time commitment and financial responsibility of keeping them healthy and well groomed.
